Goals Matter!

The NetGirls season recently ended for 2023 and what a great season it was! 100 teams, comprised of approximately 1,500 girls and young women from more than 20 villages in Katete participated in this year’s league. The NetGirls season is the most exciting season for girls and young women in Katete because they get to participate in a rural netball league. The project focuses on promoting skills development, promoting interactions, building self-esteem, educating and providing mentorship, and breaking gender stereotypes in adolescent girls and young women through the sport of netball!

This year, the league started on July 29th and concluded on November 4th, with five zones joining the league this year. We held competitive games throughout the season and in every zone the teams were ranked from position 1 to 10. The top 4 teams in each category with the highest scoring points from each zone were considered zonal winners. The 1st and 2nd zonal winners further competed in the knockouts and quarter finals to win places in the semifinals and subsequently the winners in the semifinals came to faceoff in the finals for the NetGirls championship title.

2023 was an exciting and a different year in the history of NetGirls league as both the Junior and the Varsity championships were scooped by zone 3 teams. This was a very exciting moment for the zone! The Junior championship was taken by the Superstars.  The Superstars played a total of 18 games in round 1 and 2, won 17 of 18 games, scoring an impressive 245 goals this season. The Varsity championship was won by Kwazakuutuka. This is a second time in a row for them as they won the championship title last year as well.  Kwakuutuka was undefeated this season and scored an impressive 344 goals in total!

Big Kudos to the NetGirls Netball Champions – Superstars and Kwazakuutuka – and of course the dedicated Zone Facilitators and projects team for managing the league this year! We are looking forward for another exciting season with NetGirls next year.

Thank you so much, Elida and Busiwa! Very exciting to see how the league has grown.
