Kanyelele construction was completed in September 2010, opening its doors to more than a hundred Grade 1 students who had been previously meeting in a makeshift outdoor pavillion. The school is located 5km from Joel in Chapita village and supports 4 other nearby villages with a combined population of around 1500. The school also provides adult literacy classes at night.

Age 6
Grace Phiri, Age 6
Grace Phiri is a double orphan girl in grade 1 at kanyelele community school where her favorite subject is Zambian language. She lives with her grandparents, helping them with simple tasks like sweeping and cooking. Her grandparents depend on handouts from friends and relatives to help support Grace. She is thankful that a community school was created for the less privileged that she could attend without having to purchase a uniform or pay high school fees. Grace hopes to become an Agriculture officer after school.Age 8
Mabvuto Mshanga, Age 8
Mabvuto is in grade 1 at Kanyelele community school and enjoys Environmental Science, English and Math. He lives with his mother, who struggles to make ends meet growing maize on a small piece of land. Mabvuto is a traditional name which means "problems," though he seeks to work hard and become a doctor so that he can help the local people and generate income for his family.Age 9
Moffati Phiri, Age 9
Moffati Phiri lives with his mother, having lost his father last year due to Tuberculosis. His favorite subjects are English, Math, and Zambian Language. He was unable to secure a place at the nearest government school last year due to limited space, but construction of Kanyelele was able to provide him with an education. He hopes to become a teacher when he finishes his schooling.Age 8
Adnas Mwale, Age 8
Adnas Mwale is in grade 1 at Kanyelele Community School. Her favorite subjects are English and Math. She lives with her mother, a widow who lost her husband last year. Adnas helps her mother to cook, clean dishes and fetch water. The family is in a low-income group with very little resources to earn a living, but her mother wishes to support Adnas to make sure she completes her secondary education so that she can sustain her life. Adnas hopes to become a nurse when she completes school.Age 8
Richard Mwale, Age 8
Richard is an 8-year-old who lives with both parents. His parents are peasant famers who grow maize for consumption, though the family usually only manages one meal a day due to the small size of their land. Richard is happy to be at school and aims to become a doctor to support his poor family with a source of income.
