Msonda was also promised a school by the government and already had tens of thousands of bricks sitting idle for years. Howard and Wendy Lerman donated $10,000 to bring a school to fruition. Students are learning in a nearby church while construction completes by July 2011.

Lackson Phiri
Age 14

Lackson Phiri, Age 14

Lackson was enrolled at a previous community school 4 years ago, but the school closed down do to lack of funds to construct a classroom block and sustain it. Now that Mkale is available, he will be able to pursue his education. Lackson and his 5 siblings live with his grandmother after they were abandoned by their parents.
Neliya Phiri
Age 7

Neliya Phiri, Age 7

Neliya just started grade 1 and is very excited to be a schoolgirl. She and her brother and sister are double orphans living with their grandmother.
Stephene Banda
Age 8

Stephene Banda, Age 8

Stephene is very happy that a new school was built close to his village, reducing the dangers of traveling over 6km in the bush to reach the nearest government school (Nthambo). He lives with both parents as well as his two brothers and one sister.
Esnala Banda
Age 9

Esnala Banda, Age 9

Esnala is now 12, but started school at the previous community school at the age of 9. Due to the closure of the school last year, she has missed one year of schooling and needs to catch up. She aims at working hard so she can become a teacher at the Mkale some day.

Sambani Phiri, Age 11

Sambani comes from a family of eight with four brothers and one sister. He has a lot of interest in education-- so much that he aims at finishing grade 12 with good marks so that he can to go to college.
