We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children

Leading the Charge in Responsible E-Waste Disposal...

In today's world, electronic devices have become an integral part of our daily lives, from smartphones to laptops to televisions. Naturally, our eLearning program requires tablets, projectors, and dongles for the classroom and our management staff have phones and laptops to perform their duties. We can safely say that Impact Network has more electronics in circulation than many other Zambia-based organizations! With the use of technology comes the issue of electronic waste, or e-waste, which poses significant environmental and health risks if not properly managed. E-waste can pose serious environmental and health risks if not disposed of properly like toxic chemicals leaching into the soil and water, harming ecosystems and communities.

Like our Impact Earth initiatives, which include regular educational upcycling in our schools, we recognize the importance of responsible e-waste disposal, which will give new life to some of the materials. We have partnered with E-Tech Recycling Limited for responsible disposal of our waste, ensuring that it is handled in an environmentally sustainable manner.

The advantages of responsible e-waste disposal are numerous and far-reaching. First, it helps protect the environment by reducing the amount of electronic waste that ends up being burned or buried in landfills, where it can release harmful chemicals into the air, soil and water. By recycling e-waste, valuable resources such as metals and plastics can be recovered and reused in the manufacturing of new electronic devices, reducing the need for virgin materials.

Secondly, responsible e-waste disposal has positive impacts on human health. Many electronic devices contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. By ensuring that e-waste is recycled correctly, these harmful substances are safely contained, protecting the health of our teachers, staff, and students.

We are committed to responsible e-waste disposal, as evidenced by our disposal of 1969 kilograms (4340 pounds) of e-waste such as cables, tablets, and solar batteries to date. This not only ensures that electronic devices are recycled in an environmentally friendly manner but also contributes to the local economy by supporting a reputable recycling company.

In addition, we prioritize educating our staff about responsible e-waste disposal and recycling of waste. Impact Network's dedication to responsible e-waste disposal is not only protecting the environment and the health of our staff and students, but it also contributes to a more sustainable future for all.
